Although they can grow in many places, orchids love tropical climates where they grow on trees trunks and branches. By Trevor Kugler There are many anglers out there that fish with live bait, including myself. There are some tips and techniques that can help the average angler use live bait more effectively. I’m going to discuss those tips and techniques which will help you become a much more successful live bait angler. Live bait obviously includes bait that is living. The category of live bait includes, but is not limited to, minnows, crickets, grasshoppers, leeches, hellgrammites, maggots, grubs, and of course worms. Let’s discuss some of the tips and techniques for fishing with live bait: -Fishes Sense of Smell - Many people don’t realize how sensitive a fishes sense of smell is. If you have engaged in an activity (such as smoking) that makes your hands smell, it will affect your catch. Use a hand sanitizer or at least grab a handful of grass and rubs it in your hands to remove any unnatural smells. This may sound strange, but it’s true. I always grab handfuls of grass or dirt periodically during my fishing trips and rub my hands. This helps remove all of those unnatural smells. -Natural Presentation - When fishing with live bait, natural presentation is a key. You want your bait to look as natural as possible in the water. A set of gang hooks is perfect for helping to present bait as naturally as possible. The bottom line is that if the live bait doesn’t look like what the fish is used to eating, it will affect your catch; it’s as simple as that. -Carrying Live Bait - There are many ways to carry live bait and with baits such as minnows, leeches, and other water dwelling live bait a minnow bucket is your best bet. If you’re out fishing for a long period of time you’re going to need an aerator or you’re going to have to change the water frequently. Remember the “live” part of the bait is the most important part. Dead bait usually isn’t nearly as effective. For worms, maggots, and grubs I would suggest a bait bag for carrying your live bait. A bait Bag is much more effective than carrying those bulky Styrofoam containers around. - Hook Size - While fishing with live bait, you want your hooks to be as small as possible. Remember, we want our bait to look natural. A great way to employ small hooks and still get effective hook sets is again a set of gang hooks. I personally use gang hooks tied with size 10 hooks. For those of you who don’t know, size 10 hooks are quite small. The bottom line is that when fishing with live bait you want your hook or hooks to be as small as possible so they are less visible. Start employing one or all of these tips and you will become a more effective live bait angler. Fishing with live bait is a fun and effective way to fish, and can be taken more seriously than a twelve year old at the Bluegill pond. The Many Causes of Dry Hair If you have recently developed dry, damaged hair there could be a wide number of reasons. However, there other lesser known factors that can cause dry hair, so if you do use protection and yet you still have dry hair, there could be a number of reasons why. You would think that if you washed your hair daily, it would solve the dryness, but in fact it can make it worse. Over washing causes the hair to be stripped of its natural moisture which it needs, and that will cause the hair to become dry. Using harsh products on the hair is also a bad thing to do. You may not even realize that the products you are using are harsh, however if you look on the back of the shampoo or conditioner, if you see alcohol listed in the ingredients, the product is too harsh for your hair. Overall conditioner should be used whenever you wash your hair, and that should be roughly two to three times a week. Obviously if your job is causing your dry hair, there is not a lot you can do about it and you should simply try to protect it as much as possible by using a gentler shampoo. Dry hair has so many causes that often it is hard to know what has brought it on in the first place. How to Lose One Pound a Year: BFJ Diet Follow-up

By John T Jones, Ph.D. In my original article on the Big Fat John Plan for losing weight I told you that I would report back to you on how things are going. I said in that article that when I weight 187 pounds that my cardiologist told me that was where I should be for good cardiac health. Since then, my heart has added a spare part from a pig, an aortic valve. Here is my report: I went back on the Big Fat John Plan six weeks ago. I weighed 222 pounds at check-in. I now weigh 204 pounds. Using higher mathematics I calculate that I have lost 18 pounds or 3 pounds each week. In the current version of the Big Fat John Plan I printed out individual sheets, one for each week of the plan. At the top of each sheet is printed Big Fat John and Week of: I actually print the starting date of each week. For example: Big Fat John Week of: 5/14. I printed sheets for 12 weeks. I may have to print more later. Below the title, there is a table of 8 columns and 14 rows. That makes a cell about one inch wide and just over inch tall. There is a title row in the table. The first column says Food and the other seven are labeled Calories. The last seven columns are for the days of the week. I start with Sunday. The reason I use one column, the left column, labeled Food is that most days I eat some of the same foods and I dont have to write them down in the day cells. Each cell gets only one food and if all the cells are filled for a day, thats it. NO MORE FOOD! In the day cells I write the number of calories in the food item in that cell. If the food is not listed in the left column, I write down the name of the food too. I dont like to eat more than 1000-1200 calories each day. I lose weight when my caloric intake is in that range. I lose about 3 pounds a week. That is what I have lost in the first six week period of the current campaign. When I get to my target weight of 187 pounds I will taper off to about 1300 calories and check to see if Im holding weight or gaining again. In the current campaign I stopped recording after the second week was completed. Why? Because by the end of the second week I know what I need to do to stay on the diet and I dont need to write down what I know. However, the Chart goes up every Sunday Morning and I record my weight and the circumference of my huge stomach above the column. I record my weight two or three times a week. Let me modify my statement on not recording after the first two weeks. The chart is on the wall. If I find that Im not losing weight, I will immediately begin to record. Ive lost only one inch from my girth so far. It takes time to get things going. Im not sure where my weight loss is centered but my wife says that she can see the change. Well there is a change. Ive found that my feet are no longer swelling and my doctor will probably be able to take me off some medication. I also notice that when I walk one mile around the high school track near our home it is much easier on my legs. My pig valve keeps me pumping along at a 3 mile/hour clip. In other words, I walk one mile in 20 minutes as my cardiologist has instructed. Unfortunately, walking does not burn many calories. What it does do is this. It increases your metabolism. That is why it is so important to exercise every day. My clothes fit better too. Im just worried that new clothes that I have purchased will look baggy. Well, Ive got plenty of other clothes that I cant now get into. I no longer eat at night. If I really feel the pain I might eat an apple or a graham cracker with a teaspoon of peanut butter on it. If I drink milk or juices I usually take a half or quarter of a glass and Im just as satisfied as if I had a full glass. I say to my self. Ah! Ive had a big glass of milk and now Im going to finish it off. Such a dirty trick to play on myself. I stay away from eating bread more than once a day and most days I dont eat bread. I like eggs and have them several times a week. I never eat bread with the eggs. I say, cook more eggs if you need a bit more to eat. I never go over three eggs at a time. A two-egg omelette with just one thin slice of cheese satisfies me just as much as one of my three-egg, cheese filled, fluffed monsters. Protein is essential to losing weight without dying of hunger pains. I will occasionally have a small steak for breakfast with or without an egg or two. I like hotdogs. Ill eat a beef or turkey hotdog occasionally rather than a meal. Ive found that I dont need to eat two hotdogs. I eat vegetables fresh or from the can. I add a small amount of butter substitute (no trans-fats allowed) to make them palatable after they are cooked and drained. Occasionally, I will eat a salad or a piece of fish. I like crab meat and if I can get it at a good price, or get it at all in Idaho, I will use it to make a crab meat omelette. I cut back on the salt. Fruit is essential. I prefer fresh fruit to sugary fruit juices. In fact, I limit the amount of juice because you can drink a bundle of calories without even thinking about it. Fruit is a satisfying snack and will keep you from overeating. I can not diet and go though a week without eating normally. On Sunday we always go to my sons house and I ignore any consideration of calories. I only eat once that day and I eat what I want except for one thing. I make a cake for my grandkids every Sunday morning. I eat only a small sample piece of the cake of the day. Every week I also take my wife (and sometimes my son and his wife or a couple of the grandkids) out to dinner. We like to go to the Golden Coral because we can fill up on salads before we get to the good stuff. Sometimes I just stick to protein and fruit on these visits. I ignore calories for the main part but I stay away from the desert tables. My wife who once taught at Weight Watchers has dieted for many years. She likes to separate food groups. She will eat fruits on her “fruit day,” vegetables on her “vegetable day,” and protein on her “protein day.” Yesterday we went to the New China Buffet in Twin Falls. I ate two bowls of soup with a couple of Chinese dumplings added. Then I only had to go around one of the five or six tables once to be satisfied. I ate a couple of macaroons and a half scoop of ice cream for desert. That was all I ate all day. I had a warm feeling in my tummy for hours. If you decide to diet and you never binge, you will fail. Thats my opinion and Im sticking to it. The reason is this. If you go on a starvation diet and never “binge” your body will think that you are starving to death. It will shut down your metabolism and you will stop losing weight. If you “binge” a couple of times a week, your body will think that all is well. I saw on television that Marlene Dietrich only ate every three days. I guess that is one way to do it but that would not be for me. I’m not a snake. My program is to eat whatever you want but in small quantities. I try to stay away from fats. Most men can cut down to 1500 calories each day and lose weight. That is because they burn 2500 calories. For me, I guess I seldom burn over 1500 calories each day. Therefore I must drop my caloric intake lower to lose weight. What should your caloric intake be to lose weight? The only way I know is to experiment. While you are experimenting make sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals that you need. Take a multivitamin everyday. Occasionally substitute one of those discount diet drinks for a meal. They come in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla and are available in most supermarkets and drugstores. If price is no object you can drink Insure or another brand name instead. The problem that must be overcome in dieting is discouragement. You will not lose the same amount of weight every week. You might even gain a pound. Dont worry about it. Just make sure you are on your regimen. The amount you lose every week will also taper off. So far, it has not for me but I know it will. Your body has a mind of its own and it will take action if you scare it into thinking you are starving. Thats why it is important to pig-out occasionally. 6 Signs You Have a Cheating Wife

By Andrew Bicknell When you get that first inkling that something may be wrong with your marriage do you know the signs that you may have a cheating wife? If the signs are there it might be time to circle the wagons and make a decision as to how to handle the situation. Unfortunately handling a wifes infidelity is a emotional issue and for many men is something they dont even want to think about, let alone deal with. What you decide to do is entirely personal, no matter the advice one may get from family, friends and co-workers. Knowing the signs of a cheating wife at the very least gives you a head start on where your marriage may be going and how to best protect yourself emotionally and financially. 1. Changes in appearance This one can go both ways. While it just may be nothing more than a change in her attitude about herself and how she wants to look it can also be a warning sign that she wants to look good for someone else. If she suddenly changes her hairstyle, has her nails done and dresses more provocatively you need to be worried why, particularly if you notice new lingerie in the laundry that she hasnt ever worn for you. 2. Diminished intimacy Not only in the bedroom but in daily life as well. If you used to have the kind of relationship where you and your wife shared and talked about everything and she begins to distance herself from you there may be a problem that you need to investigate. In the bedroom she may no longer show any interest in being intimate with you or if she does she displays a whole new sexual repertoire and interest in new things. This can be good if its something youve talked about, but if it just starts to happen for no apparent reason it can be a sign that she is learning new things somewhere else. 3. Less arguing and fighting - If your wife is not only distancing herself from you on an intimate level but also you notice you are not arguing with her as much as you used to it can be a sign she isnt interested in what you are doing whether its good or bad in her mind. 4. Disinterest in family Loss of interest in family functions and spending less time with not only you and the kids but with her extended family as well. This can be a sign of trying to hide whatever shes doing on the sly. 5. More phone and internet If shes spending more time on the phone but out of earshot or late nights on the internet when you are asleep or doesnt want you around while shes doing whatever it is shes doing online can be a sign of a cheating wife. 6. Changes in childrens behavior If you have kids strange changes in their behavior can be a signal. Its not that they know the truth of whats going on but they are very perceptive to changes in their parents behavior and will react to these changes in emotional and physical ways. These are six good signs that your wife may be cheating. Each one taken alone may not mean much but if you notice 2 or more of these signs it is time to start thinking about taking some sort of action to find out the truth. By Joel Orr My wife N’omi is often asked if she doesn’t believe in equality for women, because some of the things she says sound odd to the modern ear. But she always replies: “Why should I give up superiority for mere equality? I have worked at developing my feminine traits and my human abilities. So as a woman, I am superior. But as a man, I’m a failure. Why waste my time trying to be something I’m not? I can compete well with men in terms of some of my human abilities. But just as men can never compete with women in terms of feminine traits, I can never compete with men in terms of masculine traits. And since I used to counsel a group of gay and lesbian people, I can say with authority that if you knew what female impersonators or sex-change people went through mentally, emotionally, and physically, you wouldn’t think it was so easy for men to compete with women at being female. I’ll never be as strong as most men-they generally have 300% the upper-body strength of most women! And I’ll never have the masterful presence of a man, no matter how powerful a presence I present as a woman. During the many years before I met Joel, I functioned as father and mother to five of my children. I was only able to fulfill the father role by telling my children stories of how wonderful their father was, and how much he loved them, and was proud of them. But I couldn’t BE a father to them; only a faithful mom. Physically, beyond the obvious gender differences, men are jointed differently from women, which enables them to excel at certain activities that women find more difficult-though a woman’s special jointing enables her to do things well that a man finds more difficult. Which makes my point: Each gender has gender-specific qualities, as well as human attributes. In fact, if a pathologist finds a single human bone, he can tell whether it was from a male or a female. A geneticist examining a single human cell can tell whether it is male or a female. So I believe in being the best of what I can be. That includes my feminine qualities, and it includes my human qualities. For this reason, I am a very strong woman, emotionally and mentally. I am not in conflict with myself or with the people around me. I am busy being me, and getting happier and more fulfilled with each passing year.” N’omi is really that wonderful woman, powerful and focused on fulfilling her potential-in her own life, and in our life together. So what do N’omi and I have? Are we equal? No, because equal means the same. Men and women are not the same. The only way in which all people are “created equal” is that we all have the same 24 hours a day in which to make decisions about who we have decided to be. Marriage is not 1 + 1 = 2. That would be equality. Marriage is a partnership, to which each partner brings a different assortment of qualities: character traits, aptitudes, attributes, opinions, beliefs, and other accumulated stuff that makes them who they are. In fact, this means that no two humans, regardless of gender, are really “equal” when they meet. But in marriage, you are joining two very different sets of qualities, and adding gender qualities to the equation. This is a volatile mix because marriage is a partnership of unequals, not an equality of two identical parties. We need to discard the idea that “unequal” means one is superior and one inferior. That’s NOT what it means. “Unequal” just means “not the same,” or “different.” And anyone can see that every human is different from every other human. Furthermore, many studies-psychological and physiological-show that men have many traits in common with each other that they don’t share with women. And many similar studies show that women have many traits in common with each other that they don’t share with men. Bottom Line: Marriage is a partnership, but not an equality. As a partnership, it consists of two very different people who bring different qualities to the relationship. These qualities are of two kinds: Personal and gender. personal qualities are individual and not gender-specific. But there are gender-specific qualities that exist and must be recognized for what they are before true partnership can blossom. Remember: Men and women are two races that share the same planet, but not much else! To get along happily, they have to learn about what’s unchangeable-in their own and in their mate’s nature-and what can be modified. Then they will stop blaming, and start working together.
