Preparing For A Job Interview: Techniques You May Not Have Thought Of

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Carl Mueller Preparing for a job interview is an area that job searchers typically dont do well. In my experience as a recruiter, I have dealt with many people who work really hard to make it to the interview stage and then get lazy. Trying to wing it during an interview just showing up and expecting to think of answers off the top of your head is no way to prepare for a job interview. Properly preparing for a job interview is what sets successful job searchers apart from less successful ones. Certainly success in a job interview has little correlation to your ability to actually do the job but the bottom line is that the interview process is what companies use to determine whether or not you are someone they want to hire. Obviously, you need to do research such as thoroughly looking over the company website and paying particular attention to recent press releases and company news that will tell you what the company is working on. Here are some other job interview preparation techniques to set you apart from other candidates who are interviewing for the same job:Ensure that you have a short list of about 6 questions typed out and organized in order of importance that you can ask during the interview. Not asking the right questions or any questions can indicate to an interviewer that you didnt properly prepare for the interview. If you know anyone who works for the company or used to work there, ask them about their experience and get the real scoop on what the company is like. Ask them what skills the company really wants employees to have and what sorts of questions they tend to ask during interviews. Alternatively, try to find someone who graduated from the same school you did who works there and ask for their help. Do an Internet search for past company press releases and tv or radio interview transcripts that can shed light on valuable company information you didnt know. Do an Internet search for the name of the person/people who are interviewing you. You might find an article they have written or quotes that were attributed to them that you can mention during the interview. Search for information regarding the companys closest competitors and compare how the company performs against them. Pay attention to company advertisements on the radio, tv or in print in case the interviewer asks you about your thoughts regarding their advertising strategy. Search business publications and online resources to learn more about the company from a financial perspective. If the company has financial analysts covering the company, you can find out how the market views the company in terms of their abilities and challenges. Preparing for a job interview is something you need to do well in advance in order to be successful. Look for original ways to separate yourself from the people you are competing with for a job by learning as much as about the company as possible using as many sources as you can think of. The Three-Fold Path to a Productive Graphic Design Process - From Nonprofit Communicators and Design

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Nancy E. Schwartz I recently spoke with three nonprofit communicator colleagues and four graphic designers who outlined this three-fold path to a process that’ll ensure high-impact design for your nonprofit. Before you even get to the design process itself, remember to follow these five pre-design steps to effective graphic design, from finding the right designers to crafting a creative brief. Here’s what your colleagues advise: Be clear, comprehensive and realistic Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Director of Communications Kitty McCullough swears by this maxim. She advises nonprofit communicators to “sketch out as much as you can at the beginning (back to the creative brief) and ask for preliminary sketches so your designer doesn’t spend time working up something far from what you want.” Mark Dessauer, communications officer at Active Living By Design, solicits three to five design concepts from his graphic designers. “And I ask for completely distinct takes on the project, not variations on a single theme,” says Mark. “This lets me expand the discussion to go beyond my pre-conceived ideas, and pushes my designers to be their most creative.” Editorial Comment: Great idea Mark, but you’ll pay for it. Advice - specify how many design concepts you want in the creative brief to avoid surprises. Jack Sherin, former agency creative exec and now freelance designer to a range of nonprofit clients, suggests that you be “entirely confident in all details of your design needs and process, before getting started.” BTW, Jack presents a single design concept if it seems right on target. Practices are indeed designer- specific. Most importantly, think through your concepts and goals before saying a word to your graphic designers. “For us, the essence of an effective partnership is understanding that the designer’s job is to provide graphic interpretations of OUR thinking. We define the concepts we want to convey, how the new design links with existing design elements, etc.,” comments Julia Graham Lear, director of the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools. “If we don’t take time to do so, the final product will reflect the designer’s ‘take’ on the project, not ours.” Designer Sybil Rogers swears by the creative brief, which “enables us designers to create designs that are visually relevant and strategically on target.” Here are my guidelines for creating a creative brief that works. Build a solid, candid, ongoing relationship with your graphic designers Nothing is more important than building and maintaining these relationships, even when no design project is pending. Build those partnerships and keep them going, so that your designers keep you, and your organization’s design profile, top of mind. Lenore Neier, VP of Marketing and Communications at the American Liver Foundation(ALF), makes sure she develops and maintains close working relationship with favorite designers. “It seems to be the only way that works,” she says. “They have to get to know your organization intimately to give you the right design product.” Lenore speaks with ALF’s graphic and web designers on an ongoing basis. “That way they stay current with our focus and news, and are ready to jump in when we need them,” she says. Don’t forget that strong relationships are built on honesty - diplomatic honesty that is. Mark Dessauer recommends that you be “completely honest about how you feel about the work, especially if a designer is a friend (which frequently happens, even if that isn’t the case at the beginning). If you aren’t happy, you’ll be saddled with a design product that doesn’t meet your expectations or needs. The results will suffer, and your relationship will too,” he advises. Jack Sherin suggests that you take it one step further to educate your designers on your nonprofit’s internal approval process, so they understand what it’ll take to build consensus around design decisions. Don’t try to be the graphic designer This is a hard one, as all of us think we have a great aesthetic sense, and want to apply it to our brochures and email templates as we do in our living rooms and gardens. Stop! Graphic designer Barbara Wertheim, who works with nonprofit clients as diverse as the Seeing Eye and the New Jersey Hall of Fame, advises, “Make sure you hire a competent professional designer with a proven track record — and then trust her to do her job. Make changes to the design when they’re based in a sound rationale, but resist tinkering with the design — as you risk throwing off a deliberate and delicate visual balance.” Kitty Griffith, an expert communicator who has led initiatives at organizations as diverse as Citibank and NYRAG, takes this one step further. “Don’t tell the graphic artist how to do her art - she’s the pro; you’re not,” she says. “Do convey any design modifications you have. But remember that a good designer will advise against changes that will weaken the design (for example, using green ink for type, which is notoriously hard to read). Don’t force the issue - the designer knows best.” Thanks to my friends and colleagues for your great recommendations. When you follow these steps, I guarantee you’ll get better design results for your nonprofit. Nancy E. Schwartz helps nonprofits succeed through effective marketing and communications. Flying With CO2

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Sandra Robinson When I first started power model aircraft flying back in the1950s we only had the ic engine generally available, items did appear in the model press from time to time in the 1960s about the use of CO2 motors, Unfortunately ic engines had a few drawbacks mainly in the fact they where noisy, there where no silencers for them in those days and as control line flying was in its heyday many complaints about noise started to roll in, causing the loss of several flying sites, manufactures started to produce silencers for many of the bigger engines and there where attempts to produce early electric powered planes, The drawback being these proved very heavy due to batteries, the size of the motor and the radio gear at the time, A few CO2 motors had started to appear in the UK about this time, Bill Brown in the USA had built he’s first CO2 engine that ran in 1942, apart from The American Brown the English Shark ,Telco, and the Czech Modela, became available, and until around the early 90s this is how things remained, Enter Stefan Gasparin. Until the first ‘Interscale’ in Nottingham in 1991, this name was known only to a very few people outside of the model fraternity in the then Czechoslovakia for whom Stefan made a very few tiny motors for his friends. The advent of the Velvet revolution enabled him to consider selling his motors to the west and with this in mind he got together with a small firm which made instruments for full size aircraft (mostly Russian, this company at that time was suffering from a sudden drop in orders) the idea being for the factory to mass produce a new design of motor for him. At Interscale, Gasparin motors were shown by the editor of the Czech model magazine, Otakar Saffek, also an international F.A.I. judge, to a stunned group of modellers who couldn’t believe a model airplane could fit into a 2oz tobacco tin, let alone have a working motor fitted to it that actually worked. So today there is now an opportunity to build quite a variety of small, light scale, sport, competition model aircraft, either for free flight or RC, indoor & outdoor. You name it. A safe, clean, and satisfying way to fly. The power produced for their size is astonishing. A word about how they work. The CO2 and steam engine work on the same principal. They are expansion engines. The main difference, the fuel. The CO2 engine uses gas generated from liquid CO2, as opposed to steam. The gas vapor under high pressure is fed through a small tube from the tank to a chamber with a ball and valve seat in the cylinder head. When the piston, which has a post centered on top, pushes the ball out of the seat (at top dead center), gas rushes in, pushing the piston down. The gas exhausts through ports as the crankshaft swings around toward bottom dead center. As the piston comes back up, the cycle is complete. The engine will run either direction. The information presented here is quite general and is intended to help the newcomer to CO2 eliminate some problems that can arise from not following a few important procedures. By following these procedures a great deal of satisfaction and good old fun will be yours. Servicing the engine: When there is a need to open your engine to clean out dirt or foreign matter from a bad landing, replace a damaged seal, etc., assemble parts just finger tight, lock nut, cylinder head, tank lid, nozzle, etc. NEVER use pliers or any kind of wrench. Lubrication: Its very important to keep your little gem well oiled. For the oiling procedure, see mfg. instructions. Every six or eight flights should do it. A small amount with a needle oiler will do. Dont over oil. Extra oil wont hurt the engine but will, if done repeatedly, mess up your aircraft. Chargers for C02 Motors. There are currently 5 types of charger available. In the UK we generally use only 2. The simple `spartlet’ type which uses the 8gm bulb used for making soda water is cheap to buy but can be very expensive to run, a box of 10 bulbs only holds 80gms of gas, and anyway, for the larger motors the small fillers are impractable as the tank has a larger capacity than the bulb filling it. In this case by far the most economic way to charge the motor is to use the bulk adapter that fits onto a `Sodastream’ cylinder. These are generally available in some form worldwide, but do make sure if you use a non `Sodastream’ cylinder that the pressure release valve is on the side of the cylinder and NOT built into the head valve. In countries where the `Sodastream’ cylinders are not available it is often possible to get 12gm bulbs, usually used on airguns. In order to use this size of bulb it will be necessary to use the deluxe Gasparin charger which takes either 8 or 12gm bulbs. In the UK the `Sodastream’ cylinder can be obtained from Boots, Tesco etc, it is only necessary to purchase the cylinder once, from then on take the empty one back and exchange for a filled one for less than the cost of a box of bulbs. Each cylinder contains 250 gms of gas and can last for ages. Installation of C02 motors is quite simple, the tube from the motor to the tank can be gently bent to almost any shape required, in the case of Gasparin tube, it can be wound round a pencil to take up unwanted slack. The only rule to bear in mind is that the tank must not be mounted more than 45 off vertical. It makes no difference to the motor which way up its installed. Filling the tank can be done in two ways. With the filler nozzle of the motor facing down and the charger nozzle up, a `gas’ charge is made, this is used for trimming and flight testing and also, in conditions of very high humidity. This is to prevent very rapid burning off of the gas which can lead to freezing of the motor cylinder and hence very poor performance. The other way to charge is a `liquid’ charge. This is with the charger facing down and the filler nozzle from the motor facing up. Liquid gas is introduced into the tank and takes longer to burn off than a gas charge resulting in much longer motor runs. Beware! It is possible, if the pin on the piston is lifting the ball in the head valve at the time of charging, that liquid gas can get into the cylinder. If this happens and you swing the prop, the result is a ruined piston ring which will have been frozen to the cylinder wall by the sub zero gas. Always make sure that the piston is not at the top of its travel before filling the tank. Should you be unlucky and freeze the ring, it is very simple to change it, simply unscrew the whole cylinder, locking ring and all and lift it off the piston. You will see the ring on the top of the piston, flick it off and fit a new one, don’t forget to put a little C02 lube on the ring before carefully re-fitting the cylinder, remember to slacken off the locking ring before putting the cylinder back, put a gas charge in the tank and screw the cylinder down flicking the prop between turns until the correct speed is set , then lock off with the locking ring. Simple really! BUT! If you attempt to fit a ring to one of the smaller motors, G24 down, I do recommend that you wear a jewellers glass so you can see what you are doing! C02 motors are now both reliable and relatively inexpensive to buy. They look good on a model that should have an engine and, most of all, although they are virtually silent, the noise they make is most realistic and won’t cause offence to neighbours or the public when in use Engine speed adjustment: RPM can be changed by rotating cylinder. Loosen locknut, turn cylinder clockwise RPM is increased. Counter clockwise RPM is decreased. Selecting engine size for your model: Refer to mfg. operating instructions. However, it is wise to install a slightly larger engine throttled down than a smaller engine that has to be run wide open for desired performance. Mounting tank in model: Locate the tank on the center of balance, or slightly forward. The weight of tank varies with the amount of liquid and if too far from the center of balance it can change the trim of aircraft in flight. Model weight: Build light. Keep wing loading down. Light models, especially scale, look better as they fly slower. By Brian Bonito Are you ready to lose weight? Then grab a pad and take notes, in this article we will out line the fastest weight loss possible. First understand that it all starts with you, inside your mind. Have you lost weight before? Have you had success, or have you yo-yo dieted, only to find yourself heavier, much heavier after all was said and done? This process, just like any process, begins with the thoughts you hold and the things you want to accomplish. Before you can have a thing, you must be ready for that thing. You must be prepared to make a firm decision that you will stick to your new plan until you see the weight loss results. Your mind, not your body, is the key. Lets assume youve read a few diet books and youve exercised once or twice in your lifetime. Then the only real issue that stands between you and the fastest weight loss possible is leveraging yourself to take action. How do you do that? You have to go deep. You have to go to the root of everything. You have to step back and take a look at home base, your environment. Thats it, plain and simple. Its the atmosphere that surrounds you day and night, when you sleep and while youre awake. It doesnt matter who you are, how strong you are, how smart you might be, you cannot rise above an environment that is not conducive to the goals you are trying to achieve. Overcoming a less than optimistic setting for your success while remaining in that setting is like trying to defy gravity. But dont fret. There is usually just a very fine line between success and failure of any kind, including weight loss. There are a few things you can do, right where youre at, to boost the possibility of your weight loss success. Follow these three rules: * Minimize the amount of Television you watch. It distracts too much from goal achieving (an hour a day should suffice). * Do not allow yourself to speak negatively about anyone (no gossiping or verbal backbiting. Especially when that energy could be better utilized by thinking and taking action on your weight loss goals. You need energy to exercise, dont you?) * Make a commitment to spending at least 30-minutes a day on your weight loss goals (that means exercise, diet planning, and making a journal) Over time you will gather momentum and your environment will become more and more positive. Is Going To a Bar or Club To Attract Women Worth The Cost For You?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Teddy Shabba Do you base your success with attracting women mainly on how well you do at bars or clubs? While the ability to pickup women in bars or clubs can be considered an aspect of successfully attracting women, it in no way proves if you are a success attracting women. If you are not comfortable around a whole bunch of incoherent drunks there is need to test you skills at a bar. When you are first learning how to attract women many times it is necessary for you to be uncomfortable doing some things so that you can become comfortable doing them. The benefits of doing that being in an uncomfortable state your ability to attract women is difficult and in a comfortable state it is very easy. Now, when you go to a club or bar if you are not comfortable in crowded places, with loud music and lots of drunken people you can have a difficult time attracting women that have nothing to do with your abilities to approach and attract women. What’s more the benefits of becoming comfortable in that kind of environment are not worth the cost for many men in regards to time and energy spent. Of course there is also the guy who is comfortable with the atmosphere of a bar or club and easily picks up women and gets phone numbers in that type of environment. However once out of the club atmosphere becomes uncomfortable with women and no longer can maintain the attraction because he actually doesn’t know how to attract women. If given a choice, most men would want to be the guy who knows how to attract women and has no success in bars and clubs because he isn’t comfortable in that type of atmosphere and chooses not to go there. Bars and clubs are great places to meet lots of women IF you are comfortable with that type of environment. If not you should consider practicing your skills somewhere else since not doing so might cause you to judge your success on attracting women with your ability or lack thereof of getting comfortable in a bar or club. Why Does My Auto Loan Hate Me? I Thought We Were Friends!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Albert_Medinas]Albert Medinas Most of us fall in love with a car at a dealership and thats the end of the story. Hey, where do I sign? Even if we do a great job of chipping away at the sticker price and feel pretty darn good about ourselves, we often get burned on the financing end of things. This is especially the case for people trying to score an auto loan with some bad marks on their credit report. Many times, these people are so surprised to hear that their auto loan has been approved that they sign on the dotted line before the dealer has a chance to change his mind! Only later do they realize just how poor they will be for the next 5 years because of the interest rate on that auto loan. What are my financing options? See, now youre thinking! Impatience will cost you in the auto loan game - every single time. Potential auto loan sources include: a traditional bank, a credit union, financing through the dealership, and the newest darling on the scene - online auto loans. OK, so what is the best option? Well now, this all depends. How does your credit history look? If you have a mortgage and checking account with a traditional bank, then they will probably give you a great rate on your auto loan. The dealership will often find an auto loan for people with a poor credit history - but the cost of driving that car off the lot could eventually lead to even worse credit, when they have the car repossessed because they cant afford the payments. The best place to shop around for the best rates on an auto loan is definitely online. Uggh! I hate that stupid Internet! It takes me forever to find what I am looking for! Oh come now - how long can it take to type auto loan into Google? If you dont care about possibly paying thousands of dollars more in interest by letting the dealership help you out with financing, then by all means go that route. But, for people that want the best rate possible on their auto loan, the Internet is the place to start the search. But how do I know that I can trust those Internet people with my financial info? Very good point - and that is definitely something to consider. To begin with, many traditional banks offer online auto loan applications as a service to their customers, which also saves the bank processing costs. You can apply for Chase Manhattan auto loans online or down at one of their branches. In many cases you will find that banks offer these online loans at a smaller APR than you can get by actually going down to a branch. Chase Manhattan auto loans is one example of this, but many financial institutions offer their online customers a better rate. Now why would they do that? Not too trusting, are you? Hey, that is a great trait to have when shopping for auto loans - dont forget it! What you are looking for is the catch, and here it is: In most cases, you will get a lower rate on your online auto loan because you will be required to sign up for automatic electronic payments. Plus, seeing a loan officer at the branch takes up the time of employees, and uses other resources that arent needed when you submit your application online. But remember, not all institutions offer lower rates like Chase Manhattan auto loans. And even Chase requires you to sign up for automated payments in order to get a break on the rate. And what else should I know? At the very least, shop around for rates on auto loans using the Internet before talking with the traditional institutions, such as bank branches or dealerships. Just knowing what kind of interest rate you can get on an auto loan can help you when you are down at the dealership drooling over that hot new car! Remember, knowledge is power - so dont just walk into a dealership without knowing what kind of interest rate you can expect for an auto loan. Increased Metabolism Leads to Weight Loss

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Dover Read So what is Metabolism? Metabolism is the sum of the physical and chemical changes that take place in living organisms, or said another way, metabolism is the amount of calories (energy) that your body burns to maintain itself. You are always burning calories to supply you with energy, and this includes when you are asleep. Whether you have low or high metabolism is determined by your body composition. Muscle burns more calories to maintain itself than fat, so if you have low body fat and are muscular then you will have a high metabolism and conversely if you have a higher percentage of body fat than what you should, you will have a low metabolism. How can you increase your metabolism? Eat correctly, and I dont mean starve yourself, rather eat smaller helpings but eat more frequently. Drinking water between meals also helps and that dreaded word exercise. The exercise helps to decrease your body fat and increase your muscle mass. A combination of resistance exercise and aerobic exercise is best to increase metabolism. One of the reasons that low calorie diets dont work is because your body is programmed to respond to less food. It thinks that you are starving and it slows down your metabolism as a means of survival. This means that you eat less, but the body then produces less energy. The outcome is feeling lethargic, possible slowing of your heartbeat and low blood pressure. What you are really looking for is an increase in energy, feeling good and losing weight. This is the way it should be and it can be if you begin to exercise (increase in energy). Exercise coupled with eating correctly decreases you body fat and increases your muscle mass (increased metabolism, losing weight) which leads to the best bit FEELING GOOD. All the low diets dont work. Low fat, low calories, low carb. The body reprograms itself and lowers your metabolism, thus making it extremely difficult to lose weight. For a completely different way of looking at losing weight by increasing your metabolism visit Weight Loss with a difference http://easyfatloss.blogspot.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dover_Read http://EzineArticles.com/?Increased-Metabolism-Leads-to-Weight-Loss&id=497142 how another do himself i other get while a do cash what advance himself from into a that credit and online how cash those advance are payday was loan have choosepaydayloan are cash never advance what loan some payday should loan where free he games at online at for under free then instant but cash been no how deposit now required up

Dangers in the Garden: Animals

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Katina Mooneyham While gardening can be a very rewarding hobby and lifelong learning experience, a garden can be a dangerous place. There are many dangers lurking in the garden including animals and hidden dangers. Some animals seem harmless but if provoked they can lead to human harm. Being aware of these dangers and knowing how to remove or avoid these dangers provides some security. Pests in the Animal World Many animals just happen upon the gardens and either use it for a food source or they are predators searching for unsuspecting prey. Snakes Snakes help control a number of pests including but not limited to rabbits, moles and voles, caterpillars and some insects. But they can also pose a danger when they are mistreated and mishandled especially the venomous snakes. Some snakes will immediately try to get away from any human encroachment. But a few will aggressively defend themselves and their territory. There are snakes all around the world. They live in many environments including deserts. While the majority of snakes are smaller than six foot some can get very large such as the Anaconda in South America and the Reticulated Python in Africa. Even the non-venomous snakes can pack a punch. Generally, reptiles such as the snake have bacteria build up in their mouths. When they bite a victim or enemy, the bacteria can get transferred to the bite area and can cause infections. Snake Control Most snakes avoid humans and will try to get away. Letting them get away is the best bet. Avoid snake contact. Most of the time, getting rid of snakes only invite trouble with their prey. Their prey end up being destructive pests such as rabbits, gophers and moles. But removal of these pests can deter snakes as well. There are professional services that can safely remove any snakes and are usually labeled animal control services. Some specialize in just snakes especially in areas prone to snake habitats. Mammals Mammals There are many mammals that can visit the garden. Rabbits, deer even raccoons have been known to visit the garden for the occasional meal. The most common mammals that visit the garden are deer, rabbits, raccoons, groundhogs, moles and voles, skunks and opossums. Deer Deer can eat vegetation such as lettuce and peas and other common garden plants. They can become a nuisance to these plants devastating an area in little time. Usually deer are very wary of humans and loud noises. But if in rut season, or mating season, some deer have been known to attack humans. Rabbits Rabbits arent usually much danger to humans only to the garden. As with any wild animal, they can be dangerous and harmful if they are handled improperly, are sick as with rabies or if cornered or with offspring, they might fight fiercely. Raccoons Raccoons eat just about anything including those yummy plants from the garden. Raccoons generally come out at night and look for easy meals. They mostly dig in the garden looking for earthworms and grubs. But this digging in the garden can harm your garden plants. They generally wont come around if there is a lot of noise, but some raccoons have become so used to city noise and human activity that it hardly seems to bother them. They will become fierce if they are cornered or have offspring. Groundhogs Groundhogs love to eat the vegetation around the garden and will sometimes devastate a garden area as much as any animal could. They are generally timid creatures and very wary of human activity and noise. But again with any wild creature they can be fierce when fighting for their lives or the lives of their offspring. Moles and Voles Moles and voles work underground destroying roots and soil beneath the garden. A cousin to the mole is the shrew. There is a shrew in North American that is considered a poisonous animal. It has a bite that can make a human sick but it is not generally fatal. Skunks The skunk is recognizable by its smell. Like the raccoon, it digs in the garden for earthworms and grubs. It can be fierce when fighting. The spray can linger on the body for many days and it can temporarily blind anyone caught in the eyes. Opossums These seemingly timid creature can occasionally show up in the garden. They too can dig up the garden and while this can be great for other pests it can lead to plant damage. The opossums have a mouth full of about 50 teeth and can be fierce when confronted. Mammal Control Some of these mammals while not inherently dangerous could become dangerous if bothered. Deterring these mammals is the best way to be rid of them. Putting a scarecrow in the garden or using pie pans tied up on a string set around the garden should provide enough deterrent for the most skittish of the mammals. But sometimes traps and bait are necessary. Live traps are best to remove the creature safely and without harm to the natural environment. Some areas have pest control groups that can come out and assess your garden area and needs. Then they can provide pest removal services. While poisons are not recommended as some animals are protected by federal regulations, certain sprays and chemicals can be used to deter these unwanted menaces. Garlic sprays, pepper sprays and other smelly sprays help keep the distance between the pest and garden. Contacts, What a Dream

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Hillary Stone It all started when I was in second or third grade. Before going to bed every night, my parents and I would read together, usually a chapter or two from a book I couldnt yet manage on my own (the Chronicles of Narnia stand out most in my memory). Maybe I knew that I was bound to be near sighted since both of my parents were, or maybe Id seen somebody I admired on TV who was wearing glasses, but whatever the inspiration, I had the sudden desire to wear glasses. One night I starting squinting and pulling the book closer to my face, trying to show my parents that my eyesight was failing and that I needed glasses. I must not have been very convincing because nothing came of it, and after two weeks of trying, I abandoned the act. My First Pair of Glasses Several years later, my eyesight really did start to decline, but now I was significantly less keen on wearing glasses than I had previously been. Instead of making a show of needing to get my eyes checked, I did all that I could to hide the fact. I succeeded in hiding it for so long, in fact, that when I finally put on my new glasses for the first time, I was stunned. I had never seen (or noticed) such detail or definition. There were individual leaves on the tree just outside the door and the sign on the other side of the street actually had words written on it. I didnt know that a persons vision could be this good. It didnt take too long, however, before I realized how much more nerdy my glasses made me look than I already was. The huge, bright-blue wire rims, though thin, were much too big for my small face. Worse still, they didnt like to stay on my nose and were constantly slipping down. By consequence, I developed the subconscious habit of crinkling my nose in an attempt to handlessly push the glasses back up to where they belonged, a habit which inspired a new nickname of Rabbit. For the next three years, contact lenses topped my Christmas list. The Great Change I dont know whether it was my parents concern that I would neglect my contact lens care or their unwillingness to shell out the big bucks that kept them from allowing me to get contact lenses. It wasnt until I started playing lacrosse my freshman year of high school that I was finally able to convince them that getting contacts was not only a good idea but a necessity. I was lacking enough in athletic ability as it was, that practicing without my glasses was just a bad idea altogether. And when I got hit in the face with one too many balls–it was only one, but still one too many–the decision was final. Contacts. Finally. What a dream. Had I been a little more daring, I might have gone for something crazy like special effect lenses, wild eyes, or even just colored lenses. But as it was, I was too elated to be shedding the horrid glasses to care about whether my eyes were green, brown, electric blue, or feline. The Next Step Since I gave up playing lacrosse long ago and my prejudice against glasses has worn off, some may say that its time I take the next logical step in my eye care progression and get laser eye surgery. I just shake my head and reply that Im still quite content with my contacts and wont be taking that step anytime in the near future. Maybe its because Im poor; maybe its because Im skeptical. Or maybe its because I havent forgotten what a dream it was to finally get contact lenses. Hillary loves doing puzzles on the Internet, reading Harry Potter, and running half marathons.
